I know so much about Lake Las Vegas because it is so close to Lake Mead, where I camp when visiting LasVegas. Camping near Las Vegas is amazingly easy and it provides an interesting perspective to go in to the city for the night, and then wake up in the morning in a fairly remote campground where the main sound is birds. There are several campgrounds at Lake Mead National Recreation area that are less than an hour’s drive from the Strip, but provide peace and quiet.
This picture is from behind a campsite in Summer ’04. Lake Mead at that time (mid June) was 80′ below its usual level — most of the very white rock formations in the lake would have been below water for a number of years. The drought has been occurring for so long that there is brush growing down to what is the current lake’s edge.

You will notice that the water level in Lake Mead is very low – it should be to the top of the white area you see in the picture.
